SMITH RAISES CONCERNS OVER FIFE DIAGEO JOBS5.21.47pm BST (GMT +0100) Wed 2nd Sep 2009 North East Fife MSP, Iain Smith has raised concerns over the potential impact that any alternative plan to save jobs in the Diageo plants in Kilmarnock and Port Dundas may have on jobs in Fife. Mr Smith was questioning the Finance Secretary, John Swinney MSP following a government statement on the future of Diageo in the Scottish Parliament this afternoon, Mr Smith asked for an assurance that the Government gave the same value to jobs in Fife as jobs in Kilmarnock. Mr Smith is seeking an assurance that any alternative plans put to Diageo by the Government taskforce would include a full assessment on the potential impact not just on the possible new jobs in Fife but on the existing jobs at Leven and Cameron Bridge. Speaking after the debate, Iain Smith said "I am not fully reassured that the Government realises that the switch of investment from Leven to a possible new bottling plant in Kilmarnock might have a knock-on affect on the existing operations at Leven. "It is important that the Government does not forget Fife when negotiating with Diageo on proposed closures in Kilmarnock and Port Dundas."
