SNP CUT FIFE LINK TO AIRPORT

4.30.52pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 27th Sep 2007

North East Fife MSP Iain Smith has slammed the SNP Government's decision to axe the Edinburgh Airport Rail Link.

Speaking in the Scottish Parliament after today's announcement, Mr Smith described the decision as "a body blow to Fife business and tourism".

Mr Smith said:

"The Edinburgh Airport Rail Link would have provided fast and direct access for Fife residents, businesses and visitors. It would also have cut journey times between Fife and Glasgow as passengers would have been able to change at the Airport rather than going all the way into Edinburgh.

"Now we are to be fobbed of with a link to a tram stop somewhere well beyond the airport

"This week we have seen the SNP axe our Local Enterprise Company and our Local Tourism Hub. Now they are to deny us our direct airport rail link!

"Why has the SNP Government got it in for Fife and why are they being backed so strongly by the Conservative Party?"
