SMITH COMMENTS ON ST ANDREWS POST OFFICE NEWS

4.49.36pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 19th Apr 2007

Following today's news that St Andrews Post Office is to close, Scottish Liberal Democrat candidate for North East Fife, Iain Smith has urged the Post Office to think again about its plans to close the main Post Office in St Andrews and relocate it to the local branch of WH Smiths.

"Anyone that knows St Andrews knows that this does not make sense," commented Iain Smith.

"The existing Post Office already finds it difficult to cope at times with queues out into the street. I can't see how customers can be properly served by transferring the business to an already busy shop.

"St Andrews has a unique population with a high level of students, many from overseas, and the tourist trade both of which suggests the need to retain a full range of Post Office services that can only be provided by a full Crown Post Office," concluded Iain Smith
