Commenting after questioning the First Minister on the SNP's proposed large retail levy, Liberal Democrat MSP and Convener of the Economy, Energy and Tourism Committee Iain Smith said:
"The SNP didn't talk to retailers about their Princes Street penalty. They just tried to sneak it in the back door.
"Decisions of this magnitude need to be openly discussed with the industry.
"Tax rises of this sort may have massive job implications.
"Future jobs should be coming from the private sector and these additional taxes undermine business confidence in investing in Scotland.
"Introducing a Princes Street penalty will do nothing to instil confidence in businesses that the SNP is on their side.
"I want the First Minister to commit to an urgent summit with the retail industry and the opposition parties to hear the industry's concerns first hand."
