BYRE FUNDING BLOW A "SLAP IN THE FACE" - SMITH

Iain Smith MSPFollowing the news that the Scottish Arts Council is to withdraw its £165,000 annual funding to the Byre theatre in St Andrews from 2011, Liberal Democrat Culture Spokesman and MSP for North East Fife Iain Smith said:

"This is a serious blow to one of Scotland's finest purpose built modern theatre facilities. The Board at the Byre have worked very hard to deliver a great theatre in the face of previous cuts from the Scottish Arts Council.

"This latest cut is a slap in the face to the Byre and a major blow to culture in North East Fife and theatre in Scotland.

"I am seeking an urgent meeting with the Culture Minister and the Chair of Creative Scotland to discuss this matter."
