Local MSP Iain Smith was at Spar in Newport today to promote "Alcohol Awareness Week" and learn of the measures taken by the company to tackle underage and excessive drinking.
Mr Smith met with Spar Area Manager Wayne Jamieson, Training Manager Susan Glass and Store Manager Michelle Pease to discuss their "Challenge 25" scheme, which aims to significantly cut down on those under 18 being able to purchase alcohol, and the steps they are taking to limit drink promotions that encourage binge drinking.
Iain Smith said:
"It is encouraging to see retailers who take seriously their responsibility in curbing underage and irresponsible drinking.
"Effective enforcement of the new licensing laws which were introduced to change the drinking culture in Scotland can have more effect in the long term than headline grabbing gimmicks like minimum alcohol pricing by the Scottish Government."
