North East Fife MSP Iain Smith has welcomed the news that the Scottish Government has decided to provide the vital funding necessary for this year's St Andrews Festival to go ahead.
A Government injection of £40,000 as well as £15,000 from EventScotland completes the funding required by St Andrews Festival to run the event in late November. The festival will celebrate Scotland's patron saint, in the town that bears his name, and will provide a fitting climax to the Homecoming celebrations.
Mr Smith, who has been making representations to the Scottish Government for several months with regard to securing funding for the Festival, is delighted that they have finally realised how important it is to both St Andrews and Scotland as a whole that the Festival goes ahead.
Iain Smith said:
"I am delighted that the Scottish Government is providing the necessary £40,000 to St Andrews Festival and am glad that the representations made to the Minister have been successful.
"I have been a long time advocate of the Festival and have been making the case for funding to the Government for many months. It is very important that this festival goes ahead, especially in the year of the Homecoming celebrations.
"Hopefully with a successful Festival this year it can become the annual flagship event in Scotland to celebrate St Andrews day. This will not only provide a great boost to the economy in my constituency, but the benefits to Scotland as a whole are vast."
