Local Liberal Democrat MSP Iain Smith has welcomed the news that Ordnance Survey will again be running its 'Free Maps for 11-year-olds' scheme.
The scheme, which has been in operation since 2002, offers every pupil in Primary 7 a free OS Explorer map. Last year a total of 52,408 maps were issued to 2332 schools in Scotland, raising awareness of local geography and aspects of citizenship.
Since the launch of this year's scheme almost half of North East Fife's 46 primary schools have already made their applications for maps, and Iain Smith hopes the others will soon follow suit.
Commenting on the launch of this year's initiative, Mr Smith said: "The fact that 'Free maps for 11-year-olds' is embarking on its seventh year is testimony to its continued success.
"In the age of GPS and satellite navigation giving children free maps may seem rather redundant, but the scheme has proven that there are benefits to map reading which go well beyond knowing where you are. As well as providing children with the opportunity to learn how to use maps, the free map initiative also gives children a greater understanding of local geography and aspects of citizenship.
"I congratulate Ordnance Survey on running the scheme, and urge all primary schools, which have not already done so, to apply for their free maps."
