North East Fife MSP Iain Smith recently visited the Quaker Oats plant in Cupar for an update on their plans for a combined heat and power biomass boiler. The CHP boiler would burn their oat husk by-product on site and result in the plant becoming self sufficient for their heat and power needs.
Commenting on the visit Mr Smith said, "The dedication of the team at Quaker Oats and Pepsico International, to substantially reducing their carbon footprint is very welcome indeed. I learned of a whole host of initiatives being undertaken to dramatically reduce their impact on the environment such as the CHP boiler, which would not only result in their self sufficiency for heat and power but would ultimately lead to 1000 less lorry journeys a year from the site."
